International Modem Dialling

Most consumers connect to the Internet using a modem calling a local telephone number. Some web sites, normally containing adult content, use International dialling to trick consumers into paying to view content on their web site.
Often, these sites are referred to as “free” and advertise that “no credit card is needed.” They then prompt the user to download a “viewer” or “dialler” to allow them to view the content. Once the programme is downloaded, it disconnects the computer from the Internet, and proceeds to dial an international number, charging premium rates at whatever the company has set as the price.
The user may not realize what has happened, as often, the international dialling will occur in the background on the computer, and it appears that the site they are trying to load is very slow. The programme can even turn the sound of the computer off, so the user will not hear it dialling.
Once the user has finished viewing the content of the site, they can continue to surf the Internet – while still connected via the international number. The user can remain connected for as long as his computer is on, which could be hours.
The dialler programmes can even bypass international calling blocks.
Prevention
Make sure that you have appropriate virus and firewall software installed on any computer connected to the Internet and never download a “dialler” or “viewing” programme.
Be aware if your computer begins to redial while you are on the Internet. You may have been disconnected, and the computer is simply redialling your normal number, or an automatic dialler program may be re-connecting you to the Internet via an international number.
Always check the number your computer is dialling when you connect to the Internet. A dialler programme may be been downloaded as a virus, which can change the number you call to connect to the Internet.
Educate everyone who uses the Internet in your household. Your children may download a dialler programme without knowing what it is.
Be aware when surfing the Internet. “Free” does not always mean “free.” Always keep copies of your phone bills.  If you think you have been a victim of an International dialler, your phone records may assist to catch the scam artists.
