International Telephone Fraud

This is a fraud that encourages consumers to call an international telephone number that will be charged at premium rates.
The scam artists send unsolicited emails to consumers with confirmation of a large purchase that will be billed to their credit card. The consumer can only cancel the order by calling the number quoted.
This number is an international telephone number that will be billed at premium rates. The consumer will then call the number as they have not, of course, made any such purchase that is claimed in the email. Alternatively a message will be left on a telephone answering machine advising that the caller has an urgent message following an accident.
Prevention
Always check the STD code charges before you return a phone call from an unknown party.
If the number has been supplied in an unsolicited email, do not make the call – the sender is unlikely to know your credit card details and you can always dispute any fraudulent charges with your card issuer. If you have not ordered any goods why should you possibly call to cancel? By the same token, if a relative has had an accident you will not be informed by anonymous telephone call.......
