Biker Safety in Northumberland

Just what is this campaign all about?

During recent years we have witnessed a number of accidents involving the riders and pillion passengers of motor cycles using our roads. Fortunately, incidents involving this vulnerable group of road users have begun to show signs of stabilising and we need to build on this encouraging trend.

Much of this success can be attributed to the tireless efforts of Northumbria Police Motor Patrols whose officers have continued to engage with the biking community in order to highlight the many issues associated with riding on two wheels.

Figures show mature bikers are more likely to be involved in road accidents than younger riders. The phenomenon of the Born Again Biker has emerged as an increasing number of well-off middle-aged enthusiasts rediscover their passion for motorbikes, which has often lain dormant since their teenage years.

With more time and money on their side, many have now found they can afford the machines they once dreamed of. But with a whole new series of superbikes available - some capable of reaching almost three times the national speed limit – a major worry is their ability to stay in control.

Great Roads, Great Rides is a package of measures which have been developed by the Government’s Highways Agency. The specific objective of this initiative is aimed towards the Biking Community and sets out to address the many and diverse problems which affect this particular group.

Throughout the summer months, leading Motor Cycle Magazines and newspapers will be featuring information linked to this subject. Posters and other printed information will also be freely available at motor cycle showrooms and other retail outlets here in the region. Bikers and others linked to the sport can collect a specially commissioned DVD.
