Practical Safety Tips for Bikers in Northumberland

Top Tips to help you enjoy your biking and avoid accidents

Road Positioning

  • When riding on good wide roads choose a line which places you roughly in the centre of the nearside lane.
  • When riding on rural or narrow roads it is advisable to take up a line which places you approximately 1 metre from the nearside kerb or verge.
  • If you are riding in a group it is good practice to avoid bunching or tailgating other riders. Use the Group Riding or staggered formation method.
  • Ride to your own observations. Never allow yourself to be influenced by another rider's decision.
  • Gear selection and braking should be carried out on the approach to a hazard.

REMEMBER. Be in the Right Gear, ride at the Right Speed and remain in the Right Position at all times.

Braking

The unique physical characteristics of a motor cycle are such that a varied application of the braking system is essential.

  • In general, braking should be carried out when the machine is upright and travelling forward in a straight line.
  • When riding at speeds in excess of 20mph, make effective use of the front brake.
  • When riding at speeds below 20mph, gentle application of the rear brake is advisable.
  • In an emergency, apply approximately 75% pressure to the front brake and 25% to the rear.
  • Be mindful that braking efficiency can be seriously reduced by wet or adverse weather conditions.

Wear the Right Gear

It is always wise to invest in good quality gear and accessories.

  • Buy clothing which you know will provide you with protection from the elements as well as the possible consequences of an unexpected fall.
  • Maximise your potential to be seen by other road users. BE SAFE BE SEEN.
  • If you use a mobile phone, invest in a good quality hands free system. (Bluetooth) Eliminate potential problems caused by loose or trailing wires.
  • Economy is a word that should never be considered when deciding on the quality of your personal gear. You know it makes sense.

Your Bike

  • Ride on daytime running lights.
  • Have you got a First Aid Kit on board?
  • Consider the comfort and safety of your Pillion Passenger. Adjust shock absorber settings and tyre pressures before setting out on your journey.
  • Watch that speed. 12 points is an easy target to hit.
  • Think about security. Ask the police about giving your bike its own unique identity. Lock it or you run the risk of loosing it.
