Democracy Commission Northumberland was launched in January 2004 to look into and challenge public apathy towards local government and elections in Northumberland.
Drawn from a range of people active in public life in the County and neighbouring areas, and sponsored by although completely independent of Northumberland County Council, the Commission took evidence from the individual citizens of Northumberland, as well as over 100 local groups and organisations, and representatives of local authorities, churches and central government.
The Commission is now pleased to publish its findings in this report. This sets out the main themes of the evidence given, the Commission's own analysis and recommendations which seek to remedy the apparent problems with local democracy in Northumberland. These take in topics such as voting and elections, structures, consultation and the duties of councillors.
We hope that the issues raised in this report will prompt a thorough review of the organs of democracy in Northumberland, and lead to revitalised democratic participation in the County.
Please take the time to consult the report and take note of the changes we want to see implemented.
