ROADWORKS

Installing Traffic LightsSome of our activities, such as the construction of the new roundabout on Whorral Bank will inevitably have an impact on traffic using the A197.

We shall endeavour to keep traffic disruption to a minimum but to help you avoid delay we will regularly post details of our planned road works here

Current Roadworks

A197 'Ashighton Straight' (Added 19/10/06)

Temporary traffic signals are to be in place 24 hours a day from Saturday 21 October to Saturday 4 November. These lights are to allow the completion of the tie-in of the bypass to the existing A197 towards Ashington. After these works are complete traffic will be directed down the new bypass to Pegswood Roundabout and then up the C395 through Pegswood Village, allowing the removal of redundant A197 carriageway.

A197 / C395 Bothal Road Junction (Added 19/10/06)

Temporary traffic signals are to be in place 24 hours a day from Monday 6 November to Friday 24 November. These lights are to allow the safe removal of redundant A197 carriageway (with traffic being directed along part of the new bypass, see above). The lights will also allow construction vehicles to acces the area of work safely.

B1337 Longhirst Road (Added 13/9/2006)

Temporary traffic signals are to be in place 24 hours a day from Monday 18 September to Wednesday 20 September. These lights are to be located at the old junction with the A197, which is no longer required since the opening of Whorral Bank Roundabout, to allow the complete closure of the junction.

Pegswood West Link (Updated 13/9/2006)

Temporary traffic signals are to be used during off peak hours from Thursday 21 September to Monday 25 September. This is to allow the final surfacing to be done at the tie in to the west of Pegswood and also enable 'snagging' works to be carried out.

C395 Bothal Road (Added 13/9/2006)

There is a closure of this road between it's junction with the A197 (at the north end) and the junction with the C131 to Bothal Bridge and Morpeth (at the south end). The closure order starts on Monday 11 September and ends in January 2007. The works will not require the closure for the entire period but will be initially for a 6 week period to allow completion of the Pegswood Roundabout and resurfacing works adjacent to Whitefield Farm Cottages. The rest of the time will allow the road to be closed intermittently if further works are required. Access to the cemetery will be maintained as well as to properties where practical. Diversion routes are signed.

Pegswood West Link (Added 3/8/2006)

Temporary traffic signals are currently in use to enable us to construct the tie in for the Pegswood West Link from the new Whorral Bank Roundabout to the A197 leading into the village.
The traffic lights will be in operation 24hrs a day until completion of the west link which is programmed for early in the week commencing 7th August 2006. Immediately on completion, all traffic for Pegswood and Ashington will use the west link off the roundabout and the existing 'T' junction north of the Whorral Bank Roundabout will be permanently closed. This work has been timed to coincide with the schools summer holidays to take advantage of lower peak traffic flows to minimise disruption.

Pegswood Bypass East Mainline Tie In (added 3/8/2006)

Temporary traffic signals are currently in use to enable us to carry out some advance works for the bypass east tie in to the A197.
The lights will be in operation 24hrs a day until completion of these advance works. These works have been brought forward in the programme to coincide with the schools summer holidays to take advantage of lower peak traffic flows to minimise disruption. The final works will be carried out later in the year.

Climbing Tree Bridge – Overnight Weekend Work (added 5/6/2006)

The foundation piling for the new climbing tree bridge was completed on 23rd May 2006 and engineers are now pushing to finish preparatory works for the first possession of the East Coast Main Railway Line.

Until now foundation works for the new bridge have been able to be carried out next to the railway line without affecting it, but now these works are complete the next phase is to construct the columns which will support the bridge.

For safety reasons Network Rail require the construction of these columns to be carried out under a track possession where the line is closed to trains at the weekends.

A series of possessions have are planned from June until November.

10th June 2006 Saturday night/Sunday Morning – construction of support columns
17th June 2006 Saturday night/Sunday Morning – construction of support columns
24th June 2006 Saturday night/Sunday Morning – construction of support columns

29th and 30th July 2006 Saturday and Sunday Night – Installation of beams
5th and 6th August 2006 Saturday and Sunday Night – Installation of deck
12th and 13th August 2006 Saturday and Sunday Night – Installation of deck
19th and 20th August 2006 Saturday and Sunday Night – Installation of deck
26th and 27th August 2006 Saturday and Sunday Night – Contingency
Date to be Confirmed Saturday Night/Sunday Morning – Installation of parapets

11th and 12th November 2006 Saturday and Sunday Night – Finishing works

The nature of the works requires the use of heavy machinery and whilst every effort will be made to minimize the impact, some noise and disturbance during these night works is inevitable.

Footpath number 8 which runs alongside the railway leading into Pegswood is now closed for the remainder of the project.

The public footpath adjacent the Whorral Bank site cabins is now closed and will remain so for the duration of the works.
